Puratap water filtration company was born in the 1996 out of purely Adelaide needs and experience.

Concerned about the quality of Adelaide tap water in his family home, Steve May began to look for an under-sink water filter. The units he found were expensive with limited options for ongoing maintenance. Additionally, the quality was poor with recurring issues and leaking.

To better meet the local market’s needs, May began to import a higher-quality water filter and sell them to other Adelaide residents with a better warranty and options for ongoing maintenance. He soon found that imported water filters weren’t strong enough to cope with Australian – and especially Adelaide – conditions.

Research showed May that the only way to make a unit to withstand Australian conditions was to design and make it in Adelaide. May formed the Puratap company to design, make, test and service its units, giving it total control of their quality.

Puratap grew to be Australia's leading water filter company, servicing more than 270,000 customers in the Adelaide metropolitan area alone. Testing from the Australian Water Quality Centre in Adelaide certified that Puratap units could filter out chemicals such as chlorine, chloroform, herbicides, pesticides and trihalomethanes from water.

Puratap technical experts continued to make efficiencies in the company’s manufacturing at the Adelaide suburb of Dudley Park and increased the quality of the product with research and development.
