YATALA AT THE TOP OF NETWORK OF NINE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PRISONS geared for inmates from high, medium and low security

YATALA LABOUR PRISON AT NORTHFIELD IS SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST, able to accommodate 468 inmates.

Yatala is the metropolitan induction and reception prison for males who have been sentenced or are on remand.

The prison offers programs and services to prisons such as managing sentences, education and vocation training, and a sexual behaviour clinic.

It also gives prisoners the chance to learn industry skills such as metalwork, joinery, painting, refurbishing, laundry and commercial catering.

There are eight other prisons in South Australia for those aged over 18, They are:

  • Adelaide Remand Centre, city centre
  • Adelaide Women’s Prison, Northfield
  • Cadell Training Centre
  • Port Lincoln Prison
  • Mobilong Prison (Murray Bridge)
  • Port Augusta Prison
  • Mount Gambier Prison (the first privately-run prison in South Australia).
  • Adelaide Pre-Release Centre, Northfield

Each prison has a specific role within the corrections system, which is designed so that prisoners progress from high- to medium- to low-security prisons.

This progress is based on assessed risks to the community and with the prisons, and behaviour.

Special support services are available to Aboriginal people who are overrepresented in the criminal justice system.
