The 25-metre 200-tonne marine research vessel Ngerin was operated from 1985 by the state government’s South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI).
Built at Spencer Engineering shipyard at Whyalla on South Australia’s Spencer Gulf, the Ngerin was designed for biological and oceanographic studies in southern Australia. These studies included aquaculture environmental assessment, fisheries surveys, and species abundance and biodiversity mapping.
The main activities by the Ngerin included:
- multi-disciplinary research programs using trawls, fish traps and crustacean pots
- fully standardised annual surveys monitoring recruitment and spawning stocks in key fisheries
- collecting abundance and biological data through deploying and operating research sampling gear
- towing underwater survey cameras and deploying oceanographic monitoring equipment
- assisting offshore research projects in waters off southern Australia.
The vessel was equipped with fishing gear including trawl equipment, hydraulic winch, computers, wet and dry laboratories and seawater tanks.
Australian marine researchers could apply for funded sea time onboard research vessels such as the Ngerin. The funding was provided by the Australian government under its project to support setting up a a southern coastal research vessel fleet. The southern coastal research vessel fleet was a partnership between the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and the federal government primary industries and regional development department with funding from the national collaborative research infrastructure strategy and support from the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation) marine national facility.
The Ngerin was mainly moored at SARDI’s North Arm store at Gillman near the Port Adelaide River that providedaquatic sciences research support.
