Greg Williams' Every (not Everly) Brothers band in 1980s called 'best out of Adelaide since Cold Chisel'

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Greg Williams with recordings by his groups the Every Brothers, the Everys and Splurge.Williams also formed a three-piece pop group Play Loud in Adelaide in 1985. Its “Write It Down In Stone” on Adelaide’s Greasy Pop label was the first indie single to achieve mainstream airplay on Adelaide radio station SA-FM.
Greg Williams’ group the Every Brothers of the late 1980s was described as “best band to come out of Adelaide since Cold Chisel” and his later Splurge was said to be “every bit as good”. (Jeff Jenkins, InPress Magazine.)
The bands were led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Greg Williams who formed his first band, the Young Homebuyers, in Adelaide in 1980 before moving to Melbourne. The Young Homebuyers recorded one album for Polygram in 1982 and released singles “Take One Step” and “She’s A Girl”, described by Glenn A. Baker as one of the two great Australian pop singles. The Young Homebuyers supported Pretenders and Motels on national tours and had an antidote comedy-cabaret band The Latest Thing From England, dressed in silly clothes and performing early 1980s covers in Melbourne.
Returning to Adelaide in 1985, Williams formed a three-piece pop group Play Loud. Its “Write It Down In Stone” on Adelaide’s Greasy Pop label was the first indie single to achieve mainstream airplay on Adelaide radio station SA-FM.
In 1986, Williams formed The Every Brothers (a band name that Google would later refuse to acknowledge didn’t mean the Everly Brothers) that released a mini album Picks and Pens. In 1987, the Every Brothers recorded the single “This Town”, picked up by Polygram. It recorded an album Everyone under the name The Everys and toured nationally with Toni Childs in 1989.
Williams released two solo home-recorded albums Here & Now (1990) and Louder Than Words (1991) on the Greasy Pop Record Company/Festival imprint, both getting received JJJ radio airplay. In the early 1990s, after getting married, becoming a father and working in a day job, Williams formed Splurge in 1997. In the late 1990s, the Every Brothers were reincarnated, with Greg Arnold as an honorary brother, releasing two albums of new material, as well as a retrospective two-CD collection on Round Records.
Splurge’s first album was released independently in 1998. Its second album Heavy Weather in 2002 on Sydney label Laughing Outlaw gathered accolades internationally after release in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The third Splurge album Cure For The Cure, completed in 2005, was released in 2007 on Melbourne label Popboomerang and was praised for the album’s strong material and high production values.
