The first commercial pilot of a world-leading molten silicon energy storage system, developed by South Australian innovator 1414 Degrees, was started at SA Water’s Glenelg wastewater treatment plant in 2019.

The 1414 Degrees’ biogas thermal energy storage system (GAS-TESS) stores energy from biogases created by wastewater treatment to increase the plant’s energy self sufficiency.

The project is funded by 1414 Degrees and the South Australian government’s 2017 renewable technology fund, while SA Water will allow the 1414 system to integrate energy storage and heat with its industrial operations.

1414 Degrees, now listed on the Australian securities exchange, expects the use of GAS-TESS in 2019 and give immediate returns for SA Water while building a foundation to apply the technology at similar sites worldwide.

1414 Degrees technology delivers heat as well as electric power. Energy is sourced from renewables or the grid, and is stored as latent heat at constant temperature. The energy is then dispatched on demand. This breakthrough technology is set to disrupt energy storage globally because it provides the world’s most common form of energy: heat.

1414 Degrees’ original technology was developed with a focus on electrical input, such as solar or wind power. In 2017, the company’s engineering team started developing an extra offering – the GAS-TESS – in response to a request from SA Water for technology enabling a biogas input to store energy.

SA Water has been used biogas produced by its wastewater treatment at Glenelg to generate electricity and cover up to 80% of the plant’s needs. The 1414 technology will increase that energy self-sufficiency, support South Australian innovation and lead a global charge to reduce the costs and environmental impacts of energy-intensive wastewater treatment.

1414 Degrees’ listing on the Australian Securities Exchange in September 2018, followed an initial public offering (IPO) that raise more than $16.3 million.

Besides preparing the GAS-TESS at Glenelg, 1414 Degrees has been commissioning its 10MWh TESS-IND and assessing sites for the company’s 200MWh TESS-GRID product line. Across the past two years, 1414 Degrees has raised $30 million in capital privately and through its IPO to support the business’ push into commercial industries.

1414 Degrees is developing joint ventures to commercialise its technology, incorporating generation, thermal storage and industry with heat energy requirements.

The GAS-TESS 10MWh+ is designed to burn biogas and store the energy for recovery as electricity and heat for waste management utilities and entities requiring efficient gas management.

The GAS-TESS idea started in 2009 when Adelaide businessmen Harold Tomblin, John Moss and Robert Shepherd engaged a former CSIRO scientist to develop a device to harness silocon for energy storage. With research funding, mechanical engineer Matthew Johnon developed the technology, and Kevin Moriarty from the mining industry helped commercialise it.

Consortium of five large businesses buying renewable energy from SIMEC ZEN from 2019

The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) in 2018 awarded an eight-year electricity supply contract to renewable energy retailer SIMEC ZEN Energy, part of Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance, to bring down electricity costs 20-50% for a consortium of five South Australian businesses: Viterra, Central irrigation Trust, Hillgrove Resources, Foodland Supermarkets and AdChem (Australia). The contract begin in 2019, with SIMEC ZEN to supply renewables from Cultana solar power station, pumped hydro and battery storage in the upper Spencer Gulf. The company also won the South Australian government electricity supply contract in 2017. The SACOME bulk buying consortium was a response to a doubling in electricity costs experienced after the Northern power station closed. the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s gave the green light in to the bulk energy purchase May 2017. The deal enabling SIMEC ZEN to back a definite demand with its anticipated new renewable power generation and thus offer lower pricing. SIMEC ZEN Energy chairman Sanjeev Gupta  said the deal offered what South Australia’s energy marked needed: more competition in wholesale generation and retailing. This landmark deal, a first of its kind, is expected to inspire more across Australia.

Hills Hoist hailed as a great South Australian innovation but it pegged onto Gilbert Toyne's idea

The Hills Hoist, hailed as “iconic Australian structure, an emblem, kid’s gym and merry go round, in every backyard”, has been proudly claimed as a South Australian innovation but the idea should be credited to Victorian blacksmith Gilbert Toyne. After serving in World War I and suffering personal troubles afterwards, Toyne pressed on with his rotary line idea and even had it made and marketed by the 1930s. Toyne lived to see his classic 1925 rotary clothes hoist design dominate Australian backyards after World War II but in a version credited to Lance Hill of Adelaide’s Hills Hoists. Having sold the rights to manufacture the hoist in Victoria, Toyle moved to Adelaide in 1926 to set up manufacturing centres in other states, including South Australia. In 1929, he shifted to Sydney and established his business at Five Dock, with his hoist selling nationally in the 1930s. Lance Hill’s 1945 Adelaide version of the rotary hoist was inspired by his wife’s frustration with her failing propped-up single line. Hill teamed up with is brother-in-law and started churning out the first of millions of hoists from their Adelaide factory. Hills Hoist, the rotary washing line with hoist quickly became a fixture in Australian backyards. Hill added and patented the winding mechanism in 1956. The company Hills Hoists became Hills Industries in 1958. Hills Limited developed into a technology product and services business. Gilbert Toyne died in 1983.


World challenge race from Darwin marries cars with the latest in solar technology

Adelaide grabs international attention every two years for a car race chasing the sun. The World Solar Challenge for solar-powered cars covers 3,022 km from Darwin to Adelaide. The race attracts teams from around the world, most from universities and corporations. In 2015, 43 teams from 23 countries competed to come up with the most innovative solar-powered design. In 2017, a trial stage for cruiser-class solar cars was introduced with a significant cut in the allowable area for solar panels on race vehicles.

Tonsley district, airport, produce market, shop centres host big arrays of rooftop solar panels

Major industrial-scale solar panel phalanxes are being added to Adelaide rooftops, in addition to the 210,000 South Australian households with rooftop solar PV, with total capacity of 720MW. About 20,000 solar photovoltaic panels producing 6MW for eight-hectare roofs of the Tonsley Industrial District main assembly building and TAFE SA building, with a capacity of up to 6MW. Australia’s largest car park rooftop solar feed is from Adelaide Airport’s short-term carpark, adding 1.1MW to the other panels on terminal roofs to supply 10% of the airport’s energy needs. The South Australian Produce Market at Pooraka will team 1600 solar panels and a large lithium ion battery to save stallholders over half a million dollars a year off their power bills. Elizabeth City, Castle Plaza and Kurralta Park shopping centres became part of Australia's largest shopping centre solar installation worth $28 million by Vicinity Centres. About 7300 South Australian businesses had solar PV systems in 2018, with combined capacity of 102MW – roughly equivalent to the capacity of the Tesla battery at Jamestown.

Elizabeth plant a clever technical stalwart in delaying Holden's slide from No.1 sales spot

The Elizabeth plant was important in the revisions and modernising GM-H made to hold the No.1 spot in Australian car sales it lost to Toyota in 2003. The effect of tariff cuts (in the 1990s), the high Australian dollar and cost of developing a new Commodore model compounded this downturn. In 2005, the third-shift assembly line at Elizabeth was shut down with 1400 jobs lost. In 2013, 1700 employees a voted for a wage freeze to hold off a plant closure. The end came in 2017.


Ennio International goes global in clever switch from fashion clothing to smallgoods netting

Ennio International of Holden Hill has built up a global market for its seamless smallgoods netting. This is a triumph in innovating for a company that started life as fashion business.  Husband and wife Gervasio and Giovanna Mercuri brought their design experience to Australia from Italy in 1957 and founded Mercuri Knitwear in Adelaide. They built their business with quality garments winning numerous Australian awards. But the dropping of tarrifs on imported textiles in the 1980s forced the Mercuris to diversify. They realised they could use their machines to make netting for meats and smallgoods. Forming Ennio Pty Ltd in 1983, they soon added several new purpose-built knitting machines. The Mercuris were among the first in the world to make seamless smallgoods netting. Ennio International went global in the late 1980s with an improved design of elastic netting launched as String Cling. It now exports to Europe, China, the USA and Canada, as well as dominating the Australian and New Zealand markets. It won a $2 million federal government manufacturing grant to buy high-tech textile equipment for meat packaging. The Mercuris have launched more patented netting and casing products to fill gaps in the Australian and international market with quality packaging solutions for the meat, poultry and smallgoods worldwide. Ennio International was inducted into the Family Business Australia hall of fame in 2016 and won its distinguished family business of year award in 2017.
